The University of California, Davis campus, originally known as the University Farm, was established by an act of the State Legislature in 1905. A committee appointed by the Regents purchased land near Davisville in 1906. The Regents officially took control of the property in September 1906 and constructed four buildings in 1907. Dillon Brown was born in Genoa, Illinois. He earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois in 1935, followed by a master's degree in horticulture from the University of West Virginia and a Ph.D. in horticulture from Ohio State University in 1944. Brown served on the faculty of the Division of Pomology at the University of Illinois from 1941 to 1947.
